1800 tequila
refined from the raw
Each year, the ESPY Awards draw attention to the most fashionable athletes. In 2017, 1800 Tequila partnered with Uproxx Media and Waraire Boswell to create a suit using only raw, repurposed materials.
Waraire Boswell is known as one of the stars of the bespoke fashion scene. He has always found true style and modern elegance through a focused material search and constantly pushing industry norms. With hard work, passion, and craft, he’s a master of transforming rough, raw materials into an effortlessly stylish final product. Because of that, he and the finished suit embody Just Refined Enough.
Waraire’s goal was to create a one-of-a-kind suit that would be a work of art as well as functional and stylish. Through our video series, we follow him as he sources surplus and vintage materials, spends hours drawing and redrawing sketched, handworked pieces, and finally molds them into a luxury three-piece suit for D’Angelo Russell.
Each piece of the suit had its own backstory: The Pants were created from military surplus; 1950’s fatigues from the Belgian Congo. The camouflage of the pants featured a refined design and an added brush effect. The shirt was created of excess material from a production curtain that he came across during a photoshoot. The jacket was an item Waraire had in his personal storage. The material was crafted from a NASA space program parachute, which was light and breathable for the July weather.
To promote the look, D'Angelo Russel posted and engaged with his social audience on and following the red carpet appearance. 1800 was mentioned in all red carpet interviews and media recap coverage.
After D’Angelo premiered the suit on the red carpet, 1800 hosted an auction for each item. All proceeds went to D'Angelo's favorite charity, The Humane Society.
